Abstract
354,792. Withering tea; controlling humidity of air. MAIN, J. A., Clydesdale Ironworks, Possilpark, Glasgow. May 14, 1930, No. 14828. '[Class 34 (ii).] To provide air at the desired humidity for withering tea, the air is first cooled to a temperature below that required, and then heated to the required temperature with or without the admixture of outside air. The air may be compressed at 1, Fig. 1, into a holder 2; the temperature, which has thus risen, is first lowered by external sprays 3, and then the air is allowed to expand, with deposition of dew, at valve 4. Additional air as required may be drawn in at 5 to raise the temperature say to 57‹ F., and the supply finally is heated by a. coil 7 say to 70‹ F. In Fig. 2 the air, drawn in by a fan 10, is cooled and saturated by naturally or artificially cold water sprayed into it at 8, heating coils 11 being provided in the withering chamber. A store of cold water may be obtained by passing into the water compressed air from which the heat of compression has been removed. Or the water may be cooled either by passage through tubes sunk in the earth, or by allowing it to fall at night in a cooling tower.
