Abstract

454,374. Hardening glass. HEIDE, H. C., 2, Broad Street Buildings, Liverpool Street, London.-(Eokert, F. ; 1, Goethestrasse, Charlottenburg, Berlin) March 26, 1935, No. 9399. [Class 56] In order to create permanent stresses while avoiding the development of temporary stresses, the glass after heating is rapidly chilled from near its softening temperature to its lower annealing temperature, and then cooled slowly. If desired, the glass may be briefly heated between the two stages. The rapid chilling may be effected by compressed air carrying atomized water, oil or steam. In one example, a glass plate 6 mm. thick with a softening temperature of 650‹ C. is heated for 5-6 minutes to about 620‹ C. and is then quickly chilled for 10-15 seconds to 400‹ C. Cooling to 100‹ C. taking 20 minutes or to 30‹ C. in 100 minutes follows.
