Abstract

Boron is prepared by heating boric anhydride with magnesium in a reducing atmosphere at red heat, after which the mass is cooled, crushed, and mixed with aluminium and borax. The mixture is heated in a covered crucible and, when molten, more borax is added, this procedure being repeated. After being maintained at red heat for an hour, the mass is cooled, crushed, and washed with hydrochloric, hydrofluoric and sulphuric acids, excess of acids being removed each time by water. The boron is finally washed with alcohol and dried in vacuo.
