[Class 140.] Compound glass is made by coating one face of a piece of glass, for example a lens, with Canada balsam, heating until the balsam boils, flames, and finally melts, superposing a second heated piece of glass and pressing. Air bubbles may be eliminated by rapidly sliding the pieces of glass apart and together again. After cooling, superfluous balsam is removed by immersion in a solvent such as methylated spirits or ethyl alcohol.
