Abstract

545,544. Glass manufacture. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BREADNER, R. L., and LAYCOCK, N. April 28, 1941, No. 5488. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXXVI] To attach a metal side-tube to a vitreous vessel which is afterwards sealed, the tube is pressed against the wall of the vessel and is heated so that the wall is softened by heat conducted down the tube which then pushes its way through the wall ; if necessary glass is then cleared from the end of the tube as by blowing into the other end thereof. The tube may be of Pt, Cu &c. In one form, a glass tube 2 mm. long, 10 mm. in diameter, and with a wall 1¢ mm. thick, is closed at one end by a disk, a Pt tube .6 mm. and .4 mm. in external and internal diameter, and 100 mm. long is pressed against the wall and heated at about. 8 mm. from the wall by an oxy-coal-gas flame. After penetration, the other end of the glass tube is closed by a second disc, and a desired medium is inserted through the Pt tube which is then sealed.
