Abstract

484,587. Glass manufacture. SENDLINGER OPTISCHE GLASWERKE GES. Nov. 6, 1936, No. 30311. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1935. [Class 56] Relates to a method of obtaining the contents of a pot of optical glass in the form of a large block instead of irregular pieces. According to the invention, the pot of homogenized glass, after removal from the furnace, has the bottom and sides cooled rapidly while the cooling of the surface of the glass is retarded in such a manner that solidification of the glass takes place from the sides and bottom of the pot. This is effected by placing a heating-plate, or a pre-heated insulating plate over the surface of the glass. When the temperature of the side and bottom layers of glass has reached the lower annealing temperature, the hotter middle portion is allowed to cool and the whole pot is then placed in an electricallyheated chamber and kept at the lower annealing temperature until the temperature within the block of glass is equalized. After further cooling, the block of glass is divided into pieces of definite size free from striae by any suitable means, such as by passing slowly through the glass a platinum wire heated to incandescence.
