Abstract

634,258. Casting composite articles; casting- machines. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Nov. 13, 1947, No. 30247. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1945. [Class 83 (i)] A glass to metal joint is made by casting the metal in a mould formed on the glass so that the part of the glass on which the joint is to be made forms one wall of the mould, the temperature of the glass and the mould wall at the time of casting being sufficiently high to prevent any impurities being occluded in the metal at the joint, while being below the temperature at which the glass softens. The casting is carried out in a closed chamber 1 containing an inert gas. The glass sheet 2 rests on a heating plate 3 which is supported on a movable carriage 4. The glass may first be tempered by heating it to near its softening point and then suddenly cooling by an air blast, the air blast being stopped when the glass is at a suitable temperature to receive the molten metal. Moulds 4 are placed on the glass sheet and lagging 9 packed between the moulds. A crucible 10 having a narrow outlet 11 which can be closed by a valve 12 is charged with metal and heated electrically to a temperature controlled by a thermostat 16. The moulds 8 are placed under the outlet 11 one at a time, and each filled with molten metal. When the casting is completed the apparatus is allowed to cool slowly, and when cool the glass sheet is removed from the chamber and the moulds 8 and lagging 9 removed therefrom. In a modification the mould may be made of copper or plated with a suitable metal so that it may be used as a permanent sheath for the cast metal. The process may also be used for joining together glass objects, for example to make glass vats, by casting a suitable metal between the edges of the glass, for attaching metal fittings to windows, or for providing a metallic coating on the glass to form a mirror. In the lastnamed method lagging is supported a small distance above a heated glass sheet and the space between filled with the molten metal. Suitable metals for casting on to glass are lead or a zinc and tin alloy.
