Abstract
A Zn-Sn solder is made by heating commercially pure Zn to a temperature between 475 and 625 DEG C., allowing it to cool to a temperature between 425 and 525 DEG C. and adding commercially pure Sn at this temperature, slowly heating the melt to a temperature between 525 and 675 DEG C., thoroughly mixing the constituents and cooling the melt rapidly. In an example, 9 parts of zinc are heated to 550 DEG C. and maintained at this temperature for 15 minutes, after which it is cooled to 450 DEG C. at which temperature 1 part of Sn is added to it. The melt is then slowly heated to 600 DEG C., stirred thoroughly and poured into a water-cooled book-type mould. The solder may be used for aluminium, aluminium alloys, zinc-based die-cast metals and pewter (see Group XXII).
