Abstract
542,056. Making glass bearings. FERRANTI, Ltd., MILLER, J. L., and CHILCOT, A. L. Sept. 16, 1940, No. 14246 and 17129. [Class 56] A method of making small bearings consists in inserting a pre-determined quantity of glass into a cavity formed in a suitable bush, heating the bush to melt the glass, and then shaping the glass by the pressure of a plunger, the temperature of the operative portion of the plunger being less than the melting point of the glass. The bush is made of a material having a higher coefficient of expansion than that of the glass, preferably phosphor bronze, and on cooling the material subjects the glass to pressure to hold it firmly in position.
