Abstract

480,332. Pivot bearings. PREMIER ELECTRIC HEATERS, Ltd., COLLINS, G. H., and NEWTON, A. E. Aug. 19, 1936, No. 22845. [Class 12 (i)] In a thermally actuated motor of the kind comprising a body 10 adapted to be rotated by heated air currents and a supporting bearing, at least one of the bearing members is formed bv allowing the material forming the bearing surface, when in a melted state, to solidify freely with the surface which is to form the bearing surface out of contact during solidification with any solid body. As shown, the motor 10 carries vanes 11 and a cup-shaped bearing member 13. The latter has a glass bearing surface 17 formed by melting a piece of glass in the cup and allowing it to cool. The supporting pivot 14 is also of glass, the bearing surface being formed by fusing the end 20 thereof. Alternatively, a pointed metal pivot may have a blob of glass on its end. In a modification, the pivot 14 consists of an adjustable screw carrying a glass bearing member of conical shape. In another modification, the pivot 14 consists of a metal rod pointed at both ends so that it can be reversed when worn. Specifications 404,302 and 469,934, [both in Group XI], are referred to.
