Air, treating; ventilating systems. -A method of conditioning air, and ventilating theatres and other enclosures consists in withdrawing air from the enclosure, passing a predetermined portion of this withdrawn air, with or without, fresh air, through a silica gel dehydrator, cooling the air thus treated, injecting a further portion of withdrawn air into the treated air either before or after the treated air has been cooled, and passing the resultant air mixture into the enclosure. Apparatus for carrying out this method comprises a chamber 1, Fig. 1, to which is admitted air withdrawn from the enclosure 14 through a conduit 17 with or without fresh air from an inlet 2, the air then passing through a silica gel dehydrator 3, a chamber 4 provided with a cooling coil 6; a moistening chamber 7, and a mixing-chamber 13 to the enclosure, a bye-pass controlled by a valve 18 serving to admit withdrawn air to the chamber 13. A fan or other means is used to circulate, the air. The cooling coil is supplied with water from a main 5, the fresh water first meeting the partly cooled air. The moistening chamber 7 is provided with sprays 10, the bottom 9 of the chamber serving as a reservoir in which the desired level is maintained by a float-controlled valve 11, and the water being recirculated by a pump P. Wet and dry bulb thermometers 15, 16 operating in the manner described in Specifications 301,028 and 325,515 may be provided in the passage 17 to control respectively the valve 18, and the volume of water supplied to the coil 6. The modification shown in Fig. 2 comprises a chamber 25 provided with a fresh air inlet 26 and connected to the outlet 23 of the enclosure 21 bv a conduit 27, the air from the chamber 25 being passed alternatively through a humidifier 30, a silica gel dehydrator 31, or a bye-pass 32, under the control respectively of valves 33, 34, 35, to a chamber 29 containing a fan 36. The air then passes through a mixing-chamber 37, to which withdrawn air is admitted through a conduit 38 controlled by a valve 39, and a tempering chamber 41 to the inlet 22 of the enclosure. The chamber 41 is provided with heating and cooling coils 42, 43, and the humidifier 30 and dehydrator 31 are provided respectively with a heater 55 and a cooling coil 57. The coil 43 is supplied with water either from a main 47 or from a refrigerator 48. Wet and dry bulb thermometers 53, 54 may be provided to control the bye-pass 38 and the supply water to the cooling coil 43, or for cantrolling other valves, e.g. the valve controlling the supply of steam to a heater.
