[Class 135] [See also Group XIII] The temperature and the humidity o: the air in a cham ber are regulated by a refrigerant evap orator coil E the flow of refrigerant liquid to which i; controlled by an expansion valve set to maintain the pres sure in the coil at either of two selec ted values At the higher pressure nc moisture will be separated from the air while at the lower pressure a desirec portion of the mois ture will be deposited as rime on the coil. The expansion valve comprises a casing containing two valves R<1>, R<2>, the operation of each of which is controlled by an adjustable spring 2 disposed in a bellows 3 subjected internally to atmospheric pressure and externally to the pressure in the evaporator coil. The pressure of the spring 2 on the valve R<2> is greater than that of the corresponding spring on the valve R<1>. In the position shown, the flow of refrigerant liquid from the pipe a through the pipe d<2> is cut off by a valve C, controlled, e.g. by an electromagnet S<1> operated through a switch by a humidistat in the chamber, and the refrigerant flows through the pipe d<1> and past the valve R<1>, which is opened by the pressure of the corresponding bellows and spring, into the casing and thence to the evaporator coil in which it vaporizes at a relatively low pressure and temperature so that moisture from the air is deposited thereon. When the moisture content of the air has been sufficiently reduced, the valve C opens and refrigerant liquid passes through both the pipes d<1>, d<2> and past the valves R<1>, R<2> into the casing. The consequent rise of pressure in the coil and the casing contracts the bellows of the valve R<1> which therefore closes; the valve R<2> remains open since it is more heavily loaded by its spring 2 than is the valve R<1>. In this case, the pressure and temperature in the coil will be relatively high and no moisture will be deposited thereon.
