354,154. Optical inspection-apparatus. ZEISS, C., [Firm of], Carl-Zeiss-Strasse, Jena, Germany. Jan. 5, 1931, No. 317. Convention date, Jan. 7, 1930. [Class 97 (i).] A device for examining the setting of the piston valves of steam engines comprises a telescope and a magnifier whose distance from the telescope is variable, the magnifier having a scale in its front focal plane. The magnifier 12 and scale plate 13 are mounted in a tube 10 which can slide within a tube 11 carrying the telescope objective 18 and ocular 19. The piston valve 1 is shown as working within a liner 3 through which passes the port 5 into which the inspection device is inserted. The scale is arranged with its zero against the lower edge 9 in the liner so that the distance between this edge and the edge 8 of the lowermost piston ring of the valve 1 can be directly observed. The scale is illuminated by a lamp 17.
