Abstract
352,826. High-tension switches. RUPPEL, S., 8, Palmengartenstrasse, Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. Sept. 25, 1930, No. 28782. Convention date, Dec. 23, 1929. [Class 38 (v).] Contacts.-In an electric switch or circuit-breaker in which a gas-blast is forced between the contacts as they separate to blow out the arc, contacts of a metal of the tungsten group (or an alloy containing tungsten) are used in conjunction with carbondioxide as the extinguishing gas. The carbondioxide may be mixed with air. Layers of the tungsten at the arc roots and the metal vapours produced by the arc are converted into tungsten carbide. Preferably the carbon-dioxide is stored in liquid form in containers and the gas-blast so derived carries small liquid drops which assist in extinguishing the arc.
