Abstract

349,788. Casings for shaft couplings. COVENTRY CHAIN CO., Ltd. and COULSON, R., Spon End, Coventry. June 4, 1930, No. 17179. [Class 80 (ii).] A casing for a shaft coupling which permits only a slight relative angular movement or none at all, comprises coaxial flexible sleeves 5 held around the coupling by a non-deformable external ring 12, split or in one piece, and having upturned flanges 11 to press the sleeves together to form an oil seal. The coupling may be an Oldham one, or as shown comprises a double chain 9 engaging sprockets 2 on the coupled members. Parts of the flexible sleeves seat on the shaft members and on the chain rollers to ensure silence. The sleeves may be of moulded rubber which may be reinforced by embedded cord, fabric or metal, and an oil inlet may be provided on one side of one or both of them. The ring 12 relieves the rubber of centrifugal stress and its flanges may engage grooves in the sleeves or embrace them entirely, in which latter case the flanges may be inclined.
