Abstract
349,154. Cylinders. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., 211, Acton Vale, and HUTCHINSON, R. H., 9, Friars Gardens, Acton, both in London. March 4, 1930, No. 7064. [Class 7 (ii).] In a joint for connecting the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine to the crank case or to the cylinder head, a wedge-shaped strap engages and forces apart inclined surfaces on radial lugs on one of the parts to be connected and similar surfaces on members which detachably engage the other part and extend between and beyond the lugs. The extension C<1> of a cylinder engages within a ring B positioned within an opening in the crank case A, and having a flange B<1> which engages a shoulder A<1> on the crank case. Lugs C<2> on the cylinder project between fingers B3 on the ring and rest on the crank case. A wedge-shaped contractile ring D engages inclined faces on the lugs and fingers so as to force them apart. Packing rings E, E<1> are provided. In a modified construction for attaching a head to a cylinder, loose fingers G extend through slots in flanges F<1>, C<3> on the cylinder head and cylinder and have T-shaped heads which engage a groove in the under-side of the flange C<3>. A contractile ring H engages the flange F<1> and inclined surfaces on the fingers G.
