Abstract
348,385. Pistons. ORMSBY, W., London Road, Long Sutton, Lincolnshire. May 14. 1930, No. 14873. [Class 122 (i).] A flexible diaphragm piston comprises a plurality of concentric cylinders formed alternately of rubber and rigid material, e.g. metal. Each rubber cylinder 4, 15 is compressed between two metal cylinders, 1, 14 whereby relative movement at the contacting surfaces is prevented. To increase adhesion between these surfaces, the diaphragm may be heated during or after assembly, or suitable adhesive may be applied between the surfaces. Axial movement may be limited by forming the ends of the metal cylinders with oppositely directed radial flanges. The Figure shows the invention applied to the expander cylinder of a braking system. The rubber cylinders may be of greater length than the adjacent metal cylinders, whereby the uncompressed ends of the rubber prevent escape of fluid between the contacting surfaces.
