Abstract

The pistons (7) of a hydraulic motor are pressed against the surface of the swashplate by the pressure of oil in the cylinders. The end faces which are subjected to this pressure are usually made spherical but produce high local compressive stress which cause surface pitting. The end surfaces are made a surface of revolution generated by a circular arc between two points (A, K) with a radius struck from the point (C). This form of surface increases the contact area between the piston end face and the swashplate and so reduces stress. It also reduces wear due to pitting.
