Abstract

348,215. Testing vehicle brakes. LOGETTE, A. I. and DAINTON, E. H., 186, Walmer Road, Notting Hill, London. Feb. 14, 1930, No. 5067. [Class 106 (ii).] To test the brakes of a motor vehicle, the latter is raised from the ground, the brakes applied and then a hydraulic or other jack provided with a pressure gauge is applied to an abutment adjustably secured to one of the wheels until the wheel is turned against its brake whereupon the gauge is read. In the form shown the jack 3 having a pressure gauge 4 and a ram 5 engages an abutment 6 secured to the wheel. This abutment comprises a bracket 9 to which is fixed a metal band 10 to embrace the wheel, the other end of the band being attached at 27 to a sprocket chain 11 passed around a wheel 12 rigid with a spindle 16 mounted in the bracket. By means of a key 18 the spindle may be rotated to tighten the band and chain and is held by a ratchet and pawl. After the test has been made the pawl may be thrown out by rotation of a recessed shaft 24 so as to enable the band &c. to be removed from the wheel. Alternatively the abutment 6 may be carried by the ram of the jack and be clamped to the rim, tyre or spoke.
