Actuated by road vehicle tipping or balancing arrangements; blocks acting on drums; handactuation.-In brakes, particularly for twowheeled horse-drawn vehicles, a gear wheel 1 is rigidly attached to each wheel, and brackets 3 secured to the vehicle body carry a spindle 7 on which are mounted gear wheels 8, fitted with brake drums 9 adapted to be engaged by brake shoes 10 carried on a transverse shaft 11, when a spindle 14, mounted in a bracket 12 and engaging a nut 16 on the shaft 11, is rotated. Normally the blocks 10 are clear of the drums 9 and the gear wheels 1, 8 are out of mesh, the spindle 7 being located at the rear end of the slots 6 in the brackets 3 which are radially disposed with respect to the axis of the road wheels. When, however, the spindle 14 is rotated, the blocks 10 are first engaged with the drums 9, and the gear wheels are then brought into mesh, whereby the vehicle is braked. In the case of a tipwagon, movement of the wheels with the brakes applied and the body unlocked from the frame effects the tipping movement. The gear wheels 1, 8 may be permanently in mesh, if the latter are loosely mounted on the spindle 7.
