Dynamometers.- A device for testing the brakes of road vehicles comprises attachment for connecting to a road wheel, two levers pivoted to the attachment coaxiallv with the wheel, one lever constituting a handle and being linked to the other by a device adapted to measure the turning effort. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a disc 10 has integral therewith three radial arms 18 arranged at 120‹ and each carrying a block 19 shaped to grip the tyre. Each block has a lug 20 provided with holes through which the outer screwed ends of the arms 18 can be passed and secured by nuts 22. The disc 10 may thus be arranged at different distances from the plane of the tyre to accommodate different wheels.. Mounted on a central stud 23 on the disc are two levers 13, 14 the lever 13 forming an operating handle. Integral with the disc 10 is a ratchet wheel 24 engaged by a pawl 25 carried by the lever 14 which is linked to the lever 13 by a spring balance 17 or like measuring device. The device is applied and clamped to the wheel undertest and the brake applied. When the lever 13 is operated to turn the wheel against the influence of the brake, the torque required is given by the balance 17. The pawl and ratchet device enables the brake to be tested at various parts of the drum without disturbing the setting of the device. In another form two levers connected by a spring balance are pivoted to a disc bolted concentrically to the wheel and one lever is also fixed to the disc the other serving as the operating lever. The device may be mounted on a stand provided with a lifting jack for the wheel.
