Abstract
504,636. Testing brakes dynamometrically. NOEL, H. L. Nov. 6, 1937, No. 30448. [Class 106 (ii)] Relates to the type comprising a lever and a pair of jaws by which it can be secured to a vehicle wheel whereby leverage to rotate the wheel against the brake can be applied and yielding means opposing relative movement between the lever and securing means, and consists in providing that the jaws are adjustable to and from each other and are locked in adjusted position. To an H-shaped bracket 13 are pivoted at 7, 7 two claws 1, 2 adapted to embrace the tyre and wheel rim. Several holes 6 allow for adjustment. Arms 3, 4 in one with the claws are secured by pins and slots 8, 9 to the cross piece 12 of the bracket 13, holes 10 allowing for adjustment. Depending from the bracket is a stem 14 to which is pivoted at 15 one end of a long lever 16 provided with a handle 17 at the other end. This lever is also pivoted to the bifurcated end of a link 19 surrounded by a spring 20. In use, the claws are engaged loosely with the tyre and the wheel turned against the influence of the brake. After the initial resistance is overcome the spring 19 is compressed more and more until the wheel is turned. The compressions of the spring as indicated by a small lever 23 the end of which engages a lug 21 on the link 19. In a modification the claws are pivoted together and to the end of a T-bracket, the arms of the claws being connected by a notched link pivoted to one arm and engaging a pin on the other. In a further modification on the lines of that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lever is formed as a leaf spring.
