Abstract
346,546. Two-stroke engines; piston pumps. FOWLER, C. H. and COOPER, H., Steam Plough & Locomotive Works, Leeds. March 17, 1930, No. 8523. [Class 7 (ii).] In an opposed piston engine each circular scavingeair pump is worked from the adjacent upper power piston c<1>, c<2>, c<3> ; the pump plungers a<1>, a2, a<3> work in liners b<1>, b2, b<3> with terminal air ports w<1>, these ports limiting the amount of air supplied by the pumps. The casing containing the driving gear is divided into two sections. The outside rods h<3> for the upper power pistons work in chambers y open to the atmosphere through a breather outlet; the undersides of the pump plungers work in these chambers the air from the ports w<1> being free to pass out by way of the breather. The upper sides of the pumps deliver through valves k<2> to closed chambers formed between the cheeks r, r<1> forming part of the crank shaft, these cheeks forming closures for the air chambers ; the air passes through the passages t to the inlet ports m. The connection between the pump delivery and the chambers between the cheeks r, r<6> is either by way of a pipe k<1> or through passages formed in the cylinder casing.
