[Class 103 (v).] Combined buffer and draw-gear.-In a central buffing and draw-gear for railway vehicles of the kind in which a number of springs are disposed tandemwise around the draw-rod, stops or abutments for the compression plates of the intermediate springs are carried on a casing enclosing the springs, the casing moving outwardly with the draw-rod to accommodate draught strains and the drawrod sliding inwardly through the casing to accommodate buffing strains. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the draw-rod 2 is associated with three springs 6, 9, 12, preferably of the compound metal and rubber type, while the surrounding casing is formed in three sections 5, 7, 10, and abutments 8, 11 are formed integrally with sections 7, 10. Coacting with the springs and stops are forward compression plates 14, 22, 25, the latter two having sleeved extensions 23, 27, and rear compression plates 21, 24. The coupler head shank 1 is pivoted to the draw-rod 2 about a pin 3 lying within a recess in a forwardly projecting part 15 of the compression plate 14. With the stems 23, 27 normally in contact with the plates 14, 22 as shown, compression of the springs 6, 9, 12 takes place in parallel either in buffing or in drawing, but, by making the stems shorter, the parallel compression may be preceded by the compression of a single spring or by a series compression as desired. Modifications are described in which the casing is formed as a single casting and the abutments are consituted by removable cotter pins or annular split rings, and in which a stem or sleeve is formed integrally either with the front compression plate 14 or with the forward part of the draw-rod 2. For the purpose of guiding the casing between the underframe sills 18 and cover plate 29 steps 28 having flat contact faces are provided on the casing.
