Abstract
496,646. Draught &c. appliances for railway &c. vehicles. WAUGH EQUIPMENT CO. April 3, 1937, No. 9495. Convention date, April 4, 1936. [Class 103 (v)] A pair of cushioning mechanisms or units each contacting at one end with a transverse abutment in a pocket on a railway vehicle structure are placed under such initial effective compressions as to be in continuous-engagement with the abutment and a yoke or connecting element, under both buff and draft so that free slack is prevented. The draft pocket 10 may lie between the sills 11 of a car or be formed by other members attached to the car structure and a transverse abutment 12 with inclined walls may be fixed to the walls of the pocket 10. Cushioning units 15, 15a, each preferably of the compound metal plate and rubber type, lie in the pocket one on each side of the abutment with a follower block 16, 16a shaped to correspond with the abutment 12. A coupler 21 is connected by a draw bar 21a to a yoke 22 which lies between the sills to encircle the units 15, 15a which are introduced, into the pocket under effective compression.. A pair of safety stops 23, 23a are placed at each end of the pocket to prevent unlimited free movement in event of damage to the abutment and may serve to limit lateral movement of the yoke 22. The cushioning mechanisms are preferably of equal capacity. Modifications are described wherein the abutment 12 is formed by a pair of parallel projections inwards or outwards on the walls of the draft pocket, and in another modification the rear transverse portion of the yoke lie between followers between adjacent ends of the units 15, 15a.
