DRAFT-BIGGING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a draft yoke for railway car draft rigging having a preliminary compression resisting member.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure-1 is a side elevation of a railway car draft rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view in .half section of the rear end of the draftyoke and the preliminary compression resisting member.
Referring to the drawings 4, 4 represent draft members or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is attached, 5, 5 stop members provided with the front stop shoulders 6, 6 and the rear stop shoulders? 7.
The numeral 8 represents a draw bar provided with a transverse slot 9 adapted to receive a coupler key 10, which passes therethrough and through the lateral slots 11, 11
in the hollow head 12 of thedraft yoke 13.
The slots 11, 11 are rearwardly extended to permit the movement of the key therein on buffing movement of the draw bar. The yoke 13 comprises the Ushaped strap 14 engaging at its free ends 15, 15 the yoke head 12.
Between the upper limb l6 and lower limb 17 of the yoke strap is disposed the compression resisting member 18., and the front and rear followers 19 and 20 respectively. The limbs 16 and 17 of the yoke strap are connected at their rear end by the member 21, to which member is secured a'spring cage 22, preferably by the flanges 23, 23 which engage the sides of the yoke strap.
The spring cage is provided with the openingZf adapted to receive the forwardly extended springs 25, 2?); The springs may be of any suitable construction, but prefer- .ably consist of two coiled springs,'one nested within the other.

In normal position the rear follower 20 spaced apart from the spring cage, as indicated at the numeral 29 in 1 of the drawings. The compression resisting member 18 is located. between the two followers,
and on forward movement of the draw bar the draft yoke by means of the coupler key connecting the same to the draw bar is drawn forwardly, compressing the springs 25 until the rear face 30 of the rear follower I .20 engages the forward face 31 of the spring cage, and thereafter on the continued forward movement 'of the draw bar the com pression resisting member 18 acts in its usual manner. The springs 25 afford an easy action, and a consequent smooth and easy start of the car'to which the draft rigging is applied. On buffing movement of the draw bar the compression resisting member 18, being in engagement with the rear follower '20, is stopped by the shoulders 7, 7 of the stop members 5, 5 while the draw bar engages the front follower 19, which compresses the compression. resisting member 18 in the usual manner.
I claim: 1. In a draft rlgging for railway cars, in
combination, a compression resisting member, a draft yoke, a draw bar slidably connected to the draft yoke, front and rear followers within said yoke, the yoke being provided at its inner rear end with a spring cage, a bolt connecting said rear follower to the draft yoke, springs within said cage, the
