. a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railwayars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient draft rigging.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a draft rigging embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line Q-Q of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal vertical sectionl taken on lines 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the movable plates. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the stationary plates.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 10-10 indicate center sills for a draft member, being parts of the car underframe to which the draft rigging is applied. Front stop members are shown at 11--l1; rear stop members at 1212- The draft gear is indicated at 13, the same being supported by the tie-plate 14, which is removably secured to the draft member as, for instance, by the bolts 15--15. A yoke 16 connects the draft gear to the draw-bar 17. The.v front follower 18 is of a usual type and usual functionf The draft gear 18 comprises a shell 19. The shell is open at its front end and closed at its rear end by the preferably integral plate 20 which performsl the function of a rear follower. At its front end the shell is provided with a ,series of spaced-apart stationary plates 21 arranged in sets Q2 and 23` on either side of the open forward end of the shell. Movable plates 24 are alternately ari' ,ranged between the stationary plates 21.
An internal follower 25 is mounted between the shell. Interposed between it, and the closed rear end of the shell are the springs 26-2G- Meng its forward face the internal follower Q5, is provided with the mortises 27 27 to receive the double tenons 28-28 with which the rear edges of the movable plate 24 are provided. In this manner the movable plates are secured to the internal follower 25. The stationary plates 21 are provided with upper and lower notches or grooves 29-29 to receive within them the transverse rib-s or keys 30--30 with which the shell is provided. By means of this arrangement, the stationary plates '21 are lheld against longitudinal movement, but
are permitted a slight lateral movementv as required. Spreading members 31-32 are mounted between the two sets of plates 22 and 23, and include the rear wedge 31 which engages theinternal follower 25 the front wedges 32-32 which engage the front follower 18, which members are adapted to spread to force the movable and immovable or stationary friction plates into frictional engagement with each other.
On rearward movement of the draw-bar, the front follower forces the spreading members into wedging engagement against the set of friction plates on either side thereof, the internal follower is forced rearwardly, thus drawing'rearwardly the mov- `able plates which are meanwhile engaged frictionally by the stationary plate, the rearward movement of the internal follower 25 being also resisted by the springs 26-26.
'In the form of my invention shown in the drawings, the friction plates are arranged at an angle to theaXis of the shell, to, thus cause a flexing of the plates and give a higher frictional resistance.
On forward movement of the draw-bar, the shell is drawn forwardly by means of the yoke, the wedges 32-32 are stopped by the front follower 18, and the action of the parts within the shell is similar' to that upon bufling movement.
I claim:
`1. In a draft rigging for railway cars, a shell, springs within the shell, an internal follower lassociated with said springs, movable friction plates connected to the internal follower, stationary friction plates associated with the movable plates, and spreading means to force the movable and stationary friction plates into frictional engagement with each other.
2. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination: a shell; alternately arranged movable and stationary friction plates in said shell; means to force said plates intofrictional engagement with each other;
