To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft- Yokes for Railway-Car Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft yokes for railway car draft rigging.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a draft yoke which may be connected to the draw bar without the use of rivets or keys or other similar means pas ing through the draw bar and which will permit the removal of the draw bar without disturbing the draft gear or other parts of the draft rigging.
Other objects will be apparent from the description of the invention hereinafter following.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a draft yoke embodying my invention, the same being shown in association with other draft rigging parts. Fig. 2 is a plan view and Fig. 3 is a front end view of the yoke.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, the numerals H indicate draft members or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is applied; 5 5 front stop members secured thereto and 6-6 rear stop members. A draft gear 7 is shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the particular gear shown being of the friction type.

The draw bar is of the usual type and is provided with the upper and lower shoulders 1111. The yoke comprises a pair of loops arranged side by side, each loop comprising upper and lower limbs 12 and 13 respectively, connected at their rear ends by the preferably integral member 1st and at their front ends by the preferably integral side plate 15. Each of the loops is provided at the rear end with suitable means as, for instance, the inter-engaging butts 16-16 having perforations for the passage of the bolt 17 forming a hinged or pivoted connection between the two loops at their Specification of Letters Patent.

lower ones being adapted to engage the lower shoulder 11 of the draw bar.
When in assembled position, as illustrated in the drawings, the two loops of the yoke are held together at their forward ends by means of the transverse bolt 18 passing through suitable perforations in the lower lug 19 with which the limbs of the yoke are provided near their forward ends. It will thus be seen that, when the two loops are arranged in their assembled position side by side and the bolt 18 is inserted and the nut drawn home thereon, the draw bar is securely connected to the yoke so that, on forward movement of the draw bar, the shoulders thereof are in engagement with the gibs of the yoke, thus drawing the yoke forward and compressing the gear in a manner readily understood. On rearward movement of the draw bar, the same may slide rearwardly within the yoke without movement of the yoke, if desired. It will be understood that the yoke and gear may be supported in their position between the draft members by any suitable means as, for instance, the supporting plate 20 secured to the draft members.
In order to permit the spreading of the yoke to enable the forward withdrawal of the draw bar, the limbs are, on their outer edges near the forward end and substantially 0pposite the front stop members, cut away or indented as shown at the numerals 2l21 in Fig. 2 of the drawings. By reason of this construction, the nut of the retaining bolt 18 may be removed and the limbs of the yoke spread apart a distance sufiiciently great to permit the forward withdrawal of the draw bar. The gibs upon the yoke are, as will be noted at the numerals 22-22 in Fig. 2 of the drawings, outwardly inclined along their inner faces from their forward edges in order to make them substantially parallel with each other and with the draft members when they are spread apart, to effect the ready forward removal of the draw bar.
In View of the standard sill spacing which rarely exceeds 12% in., it will be observed that I have provided a yoke which may be employed in the narrow space between the front stop members and which, at the same time, can be spread to permit the withdrawal of the draw bar without dismounting the gear or other parts of the draft rigging, and have made this possible with a yoke of the keyless type.
I claim: a
1. In a draft yoke, a pair of loops arranged side by side, the said loops having at their forward ends gibs adapted to engage the shoulders of a draw bar, the said, gibs along their inner faces being rearwardly and outwardly inclined, whereby the said inner edges of the gibs upon one loop are substantially parallel with those upon the other loop when the two loops are spread at their forward ends to permit the withdrznval of a draw bar.
2. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with front stop members and a draw bar, of a draft yoke, a draft yoke comprising a pair of loops arranged side by side, each loop being provided at its forward end with gibs to engage the draw bars shoulders and being adjacent the front stops indented to permit the separation of said loops whereby the draw bar may be forwardly withdrawn between the opposed gibs upon said loops.
