To Ml whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE LYON HARVEY, acitizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a true and full description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form of my invention.
This invention relates to draft-rigging such as is used to connect railway cars to each other; and it has for its objects, first, the production of a strong draft attachment of few parts; second, the production of such a device which will not be liable to spread laterally; third, the production of such a device which can be easily repaired when damaged, and, fourth, the production of a device which can readily be substituted for the draft attachments now in use. I accomplish these objects .by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, showing it attached to a draft-sill on one side, withthe opposite draft-sill, forward stop, and angle-iron removed. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a section on line a mof Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar view on line b b of Fig. 3, the back stop being omitted.

2 2 designate plates secured to the inner faces of the draft-sills. They reinforce the sills and serve as means for directly supporting the back stop for the rear follower-plate and for other parts of the rigging.
The plates 2 2, as illustrated, constitute the webs of flanged members, the flanges 3 3 of which are located along the top edges and form the top guides for the follower-plates. If desired, other forms of top guides may be 7 employed.

The back stop is designated by the numeral 5 and is made of a single piece and is secured between the parallel sills by means of the bolts or rivets 19. The back stop is provided with forward extensions .6, which serve as guides for the rear follower 7. These extensions also serve to reinforce the draft-sills and to prevent the latter from spreading. Secured in advance of the back stops are two side pieces 8, which have formed on them projections 9, which serve as stops for the forward follower 10..

The strips 14 are provided to support and to form the lower guides for the followers 7 and 10. These strips are removable to allow the assembling and dissembling of the parts and are held in position by the bolts 15 and 16. It has been found that there is a tendency when the back stop is made of two or more pieces, as is the ordinary practice, for the sills to spread whenever the draft mechanism is subjected to excessive strains. This spreading is due partly to the follower bending and While so bent exerting lateral as well as longitudinal pressure. To overcome all danger of this spreading, I make my back stop of one piece and provide it with shoulders 18, which receive the follower 7, and a recess 17 to receive the rear end of the tail-strap 12. The shoulders being located on one integral piece, there is no danger of the sills being forced outwardly by the follower 7.
The side pieces 8, which carry the forward stops 9, are made separate from the back stop 5, for the reason that should either the front or back stop be pulled out the same could be replaced without removing the uninjured part.
The front stops are secured in place by means of the rivets or bolts 19 and are further secured by having the front ends of the flanged-members 2 bent around their front ends and secured by rivets 21. This latter feature gives the front stops great stability.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, various changes can be made in it without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire protection for such changes as fall within the scope of my claims.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the kind described, longitudinal draft-sills, plates secured to said sills, follower-stops between said plates and gripping connections between the plates and the stops, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the kind described, longitudinal draft-sills, plates secured to said sills and having flanges constituting followerguides, follower-stops between said plates,and gripping means integral with the plates and engaging the follower-stops, substantially as described.
3. In adevice of the kind described, a draftsill, a reinforcing-plate secured'to the sill and a stop for controlling the action of a drawbar, a bent portion of the reinforcing member overlapping the end of the stop, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the kind described, a draftsill, a reinforcing-plate secured to the sill and a stop having a gripping engagement with the reinforcing member and controlling the action of a draw-bar, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the kind described, longitudinal draft-sills, and flanged members secured to the draft-sills and having portions bent inward and backward, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the kind described, longitudinal draft-sills, a back stop secured to the draft-sills, forward stops secured to the draftsills, followers between the stops, and guides for the followers also secured to the sills, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the kind described. parallel draft-sills, flanged members secured to said sills and an integral back stop secured between said flanged members, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the kind described, parallel draft-sills, flanged members secured to the draft-sills, an integral back stop secured between the flanged members and forward stops independent of said back stops, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the kind described, the combination of draft-sills, flanged members secured thereto, side pieces carrying stops secured to the flanged members, the ends of said members being bent around the ends of said pieces, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the kind described, longitudinal draft-sills, reinforcing members attached to said sills, an integral back stop secured to said longitudinal sills, and front stops engaged by said reinforcing members, substantially as described.
11. In a device of the kind described, longitudinal draft-sills, reinforcing members attached to said sills and carrying front stops, an integral back stop secured to said longitudinal sills and provided with shoulders, followers between said front stops and said shoulders, and a spring between said followers, substantially as described.
12. In a device of the kind described, longitudinal draft-sills, reinforcing members attached to said draft-sills, and carrying front stops, guides attached to said reinforcing members, an integral back stop secured to said sills and carrying shoulders, followers adapted to engage said front stops and said shoulders, a spring between said followers and attached to a draw-head, substantially as described.
