[Classes 103 (v) and 103 (vi).] Combined buffer and draw-gear; underframing of bodies.-In combined buffing and draw-gear for railway vehicles of the kind in which buffing and draw springs or friction gear are embraced by a yoke 2 having a slot and cotter connection with the shank 1 of the coupler-head 18, additional springs or friction devices are arranged alongside those within the yoke, but at the outer sides of the longitudinal sills 4 between which the yoke slides. In the arrangement shown each of the shock-absorbing elements comprises a pair of springs 7 of the compound metal and rubber type arranged tandemwise between endfollower plates 9 and intermediate follower plates 8. The two sets of plates 9 bear against front and rear transverse compression members 6 which pass through slots in the yoke 2 and sills 4, while the two intermediate plates 8 are provided with a number of distance pieces or legs 10 disposed in staggered relationship. In either buffing or drawing relative displacement occurs between the forward compression member 6, forward plate 9 and rear intermediate plate 8 on the one hand and the rear compression member 6, rear plate 9 and forward intermediate plate 8 on the other hand. For guiding purposes the springs 7 and plates 8, 9 are adapted to slide on centrallydisposed bolts 11, the middle one of which extends forwardly so as to engage a recess in the rear end of the coupler head shank and assist in centralizing the latter. The coupler-head 18 may be supported by a transverse bar 19 suspended by pivoted centralizing links. At its rear end the yoke 2 bears against a casting 12 which is formed integrally with the longitudinal sills 4 and with flanges 15 adapted to be bolted to longitudinals 16, while the centre part of the casting may receive the bogie pivot pin.
