Abstract

168,527. Miner, W. H. Sept. 11, 1920. Vibration-dampers.-A friction shock-absorbing mechanism comprises spring means disposed within laterally movable friction shoes, which shoes co-operate with combined friction shoes and wedge members housed within and co-operating with a double-ended friction shell, said shoes being adapted automatically to compensate for wear on the various friction surfaces. Within the friction shell A are housed four friction and wedge-action shoes B retained apart by the laterally movable shoes C between which are springs 26, 27. Lugs 24 on the friction shoes B work in a slot E in the friction shell A. A portion of the shoes C is cut away at F to allow deeper engagement between the wedge members B as wear occurs. Front and rear followers 15, 16 between stops 11, 12 respectively are enclosed between a draught yoke 14. In extreme buffing or draught the wedge shoes B and the shoes C abut on their edges simultaneously with the followers 15, 16 abutting the ends of the friction shell A.
