606,517. Buffers for railway vehicles. MINER, Inc., W. H. Aug. 21, 1945, No. 21395. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1944. [Class 103 (v)] A friction buffer for railway cars comprises a housing A closed at its rear end, a friction shock-absorber C within the housing and including a friction casing 27 closed at'its front end, the friction shock-absorber bearing against the closed rear end of the housing A, a buffer head B slidable within the housing A, and springs D interposed between the buffer head and the closed front end of the casing 27 for absorbing light impacts. The buffer head B is formed with three out-turned flanges 23 which slide between longitudinal guides 17 on the inside surface of the front cylindrical portion of the housing A, and the front end of the hexagonal casing 27 is provided with a hexagonal boss 32 engageable with a correspondingly shaped opening 26 at the end of the buffer head cylinder 21 to prevent rotation of the buffer head while the friction shock-absorber is in operation. The latter comprises three V-shaped friction shoes 28 located between the rear end of the casing 27 and a wedge block 29, springs 30 being disposed between the front closure member of the casing, and the shoes and wedge block. Slotted holes 20, 37, 38 are provided in the members of the friction shock absorber for the insertion of a T-headed bolt for compressing the springs 30 while the unit is being assembled.
