Abstract

597,554. Buffer mechanisms. MINER, Inc., W. H. Aug. 22, 1945, No. 21512. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1944. [Class 103 (v] In a buffer for a railway vehicle in which the initial shock is absorbed by springs and subsequent shock by a friction wedge-action, the friction casing 17 containing the friction shoes C is integral with the buffer head 18 and is maintained in the housing A by co-operating lugs 20, 13. In the initial movement the spring E separating the wedge D from the housing A is compressed. Subsequently a shoulder 29 on the wedge D abuts against a guide sleeve 15 so that further motion causes wedge D to expand the shoes C into frictional engagement with the casing 17. The shank 28 of the wedge D and the guide sleeve 15 receiving this shank are hexagonal in transverse section, as is the head of the wedge D. The shoes C are V-shaped in transverse section and slidingly engage both the wedge D and the hexagonal section inner surface of the casing 17. Lugs on the wedge D fit between the shoes C and co-operate with lugs on the casing 17 to prevent separation of the wedge and casing.
