624,498. Vehicle buffers or draw-gears. SYMINGTON - GOULD CORPORATION. May 5, 1947, No. 12094. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1945. [Class 103 (v)] A cushioning device for use in vehicle drawgear and buffing apparatus comprises a housing 1, within which are mounted helical springs 7, a spring bearing plate 10, a pair of wedge elements 14, which have inclined bearing surfaces 11 engaging corresponding surfaces 15 on the housing, and which are pressed outwardly by leaf-springs 18, and a followermember 22. Inward movement of the follower 22 is resisted by compression of the springs 7 and by frictional resistance between the surfaces 11 and 15 and between the end faces of the wedge elements 14 and the plate 10 and the face 26 of the follower. Sufficient clearance is provided between shoulders 29 of the follower and the inside of the housing to enable the follower to execute an angling movement both horizontally and vertically relative to the integral housing.
