Abstract

926,933. Railway vehicle buffers. W. H. MINER Inc. April 29, 1960 [May 18, 1959(2)], No. 15197/60. Class 103(5). A buffer having telescopic casing members A, B comprises, a spring biased friction wedge C and shoe arrangement E wherein the wedge is provided with three lugs 19 which may be rotated to lie beneath three lugs 20 on the containing casing member to prevent separating of the members, and a separate hexagonal locking key which co-operates with hexagonal mating surfaces in the wedge and an internal boss on the other casing member to prevent relative rotation between the casing members. In Fig. 1 the wedge C is also provided with lugs 23 which engage lugs 24 on the boss 25, and spring guides 14 are provided in the member B. The lugs on the wedge and casing members may be engaged during assembly by pushing downwardly the wedge C with its key 27 and shoes E against the already positioned springs 15, 16, so that the wedge may be rotated until the lugs 19 register beneath the lugs 20. A threaded rod is then passed through the base hole 32 into a T slot 31 in the head 30 of the key 27, so that the key may be pulled back against the spring 15 to permit the casing member A to be placed over the casing member B and rotated into locking position with the lugs 23, 24 in engagement, In order to facilitate the rotation of the wedge against the pressure of the spring 15 during assembly the key head may be made separate from its shank so that the wedge and shank may be rotated relative to the retracted key head. In another embodiment, Figs. 5, and 6 (not shown), the casing members also engaged one with the other by means of external lugs 38, 39, and the locking key is a hexagonal member 40 engaging a hexagonal boss 42 on the member A and fitting within a hexagonal bore 43 in the wedge C. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the stem 11 telescopes within the stem 13, and the wedge, shoe, and key arrangement is near to the base 12. Initially buffing load is resisted only by the spring 15, but when impact forces of a magnitude utilizing all of the initial movement are encountered then the friction elements together with the outer spring 16 enter into shock absorbing relation.
