352,318. Railway vehicles. GLASCODINE, R. T., 2, Central Buildings, Westminster. Sept. 16, 1930, No. 27611. [Classes 103 (v) and 103 (vi).] Combined buffer and draw-gear; underframing of bodies.-In a central buffing and draw-gear for railway vehicles, lateral buffing or other shocks are absorbed by means of resilient cushions of rubber or like material disposed between the gear and the vehicle underframe, the cushions preferably being faced with metal plates or liners which constitute bearing surfaces for the spring follower plates or for the draw-rod head. In Fig. 2 the invention is shown as applied to a gear of the known type in which the coupler-head shank 2 is connected to the yoke 6 by means of a single slot-and-cotter connection, and the spring 17 is located between front and rear follower plates 11, 12 associated with abutments 15, 16 on the underframe. The cushions 21 referred to consist of rubber strips mounted on the vertical faces of the longitudinal sills 14 by means of bolts 22 and nuts 24 which also secure in position the liners 20. The latter are prevented from longitudinal displacement by contacting with the abutments 15, 16, and form guides for the follower plates 11, 12, which are preferably flanged to provide larger sliding contact surfaces. In a modification, Fig. 6, separate cushions 61, 63 and liners 60, 62 are provided for the follower plates 54, 55 in an arrangement incorporating tandem springs 52, 53 adapted in known manner to be compressed in series between the follower plates 54, 55 and a plate 72 formed integral with a spacing sleeve 71. In this case, longitudinal movement of the liners is prevented partly by the abutments 57, 58 and partly by stops 64, 66 formed either by separate metal attachments or by moulding the appropriate ends of the rubber cushions with suitable tianges. In a further construction, Fig. 4, the cushions 39, 41 are secured to castings 34, 35 riveted to the centre sills 36, 37, and the liner plates 38 form guides for the draw-rod head 33.
