Abstract
380,120. Combined buffing and drawgear for railway vehicles. AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES, 410, North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. June 10, 1931. No. 16874. Convention date, Feb. 19. [Class 103 (v).] In a combined friction buffing and drawgear for railway vehicles the transversely disposed wedge blocks 18, 22 pass through slots 36 in the underframe sills 10, and the coupler 38 is provided with an integral shank or yoke 40 that embraces the wedge blocks and thereby secures the coupler to the sills. Adjacent to the slots 36 the sills are reinforced by a casting 11<1> comprising a forward striking surface 14, draught and buffing stops 12, 13, and a coupler supporting surface 15 fitted with a wear plate 16. The transverse wedges 18, 22 co-operate with longitudinally disposed wedges 25, 26 which are adapted to be displaced laterally against the action of springs 31 embracing a connecting-rod 30. In order to allow the coupler to pivot freely when under either draught or buffing stress the yoke 40 at its rear end is formed with a part cylindrical surface 42 engaging a corresponding surface 24 on the rear wedge 22, while at its forward end the yoke has a concentric surface 43 adapted to abut against a correspondingly curved surface 21 on the front wedge 18. In addition, the coupler is permitted a certain amount of vertical play by making the opening in the casting 14 of a sufficient height and by increasing the depth of the slot in the yoke 40 at the outer or forward end of the latter. In assembling the gear the yoke and coupler are inserted into the casting from the front, and then the friction elements are introduced from the outer sides of the sills 10. In a modification the yoke is introduced from underneath the casting and is formed with a lug which coacts with an internal projection on the casting to prevent the gear from being completely separated from the underframe in the event of the gear collapsing.
