Vibration-dampers.-In a friction draught and buffing gear for a railway vehicle, the tail bolt of a known coupler forms the central friction member of a shock-absorbing device and has assembled upon it friction shoes, a spring, and a follower wedge, the wedge being arranged to transmit stresses directly from the coupler to the frictional elements. The central friction member 12 may be integral with the rear follower plate 6 and has an eye 3 at its forward end by which it is connected to the coupler shank A by a key 4, the slot 5 in the coupler shank being widened to permit lateral play. On the member 12 is mounted a spring 16, intermediate two-part follower plate 15<a>, friction shoes 13 engaging in recesses in the member 12, and a front follower plate 8. The front and rear follower plates 8 and 6 respectively are mounted between draught lugs on the underframing (not shown) and are slidable toward one another on rods. 17 and maintain the spring 16 in compression by means of tie bars 18. Extensions 11 on the front follower plate form a guide for the central friction member 12 and also a seating 9 for the curved lugs of the coupler shank. The frictional parts of the draft and buffing gear may be of the type described in Specification 146,952.
