JOHN F. OCONNOR, 'OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR TO WILLIAM I-I. MINER, OF
CI-IAZY, 4NEW 'YORK. Y
TANDEIVI DRAFT-GEAR YOKE FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Application led June 6, 1919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tandem Draft-Gear Yokes for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tandem draft gear yokes for railway cars.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a yoke of strong construction and one in which the usual U-shaped yoke strap heretofore largely used may be employed. Other objects will appear from the description of the invention hereinafter following.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a draft yoke embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the forward portion of said yoke. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a draw bar, the rear portion only of which is shown. The said draw bar is provided with a transverse key slot 11 for the passage of the coupler key 12. The numeral 13 indicates a yoke strap of a type commonly used and adapted to be riveted at its forward ends to the butt of a draw bar, the usual construction being of wrought iron. I employ this U-shaped yoke strap in connection with the other devices hereinafter described to accomplish the objects of my invention. I provide a yoke head 14 of general hollow box-like construction to receive the draw bar, the head having side members 15-15, a top member 16 and a bottom member 17. The yoke head is internally provided with the transverse shoulders indicated at 18-18, against which the forward free ends of the U-shaped member 13 abut. The outer faces of the upper and lower members 16 and 17 of the yoke head are rearwardly inwardly inclined, as clearly shown at the numerals 19-19 in Fig. 1 of the drawing. 20 indicates a yoke thimble which may be of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Serial No. 302,257.
any suitable construction, that shown being of a boX-like form and adapted to be secured to the yoke strap by upper and lower short rivets 22. Extending from the intermediate thimble 20 of the yoke to the head, I provider upper and lower truss members 21-21 secured to the yoke strap and to the thimble at their rear ends by the short rivets 22-22 and at their forward ends engaging againstv the inclined upper and lower portions 19 of the yoke head, to which they are secured by suitable means-as, for instance, the rivets 28-23 passing through the perforations 24 therein, the registering perforations 25 in the yoke head and through the usual perforations 26 provided in the U-shaped yoke strap 13 near its free ends. The sides of the yoke head are provided with the coupler key slots 27 for the passage of the coupler key 12.
It will be observed that the construction described provides a simple yoke in which the old wrought iron yoke straps may be employed, which permits of the ready attachment and detachment of the draw bar and which is strongly reinforced by means of the truss members in combination with the other' parts to provide a strong member tl'nough which, in bufling action, the force of the draw bar is transmitted to the rear compression-resisting elements, which, it will be readily understood, are mounted within the rear pocket 28 of the draft yoke. It will also be clear that the forward pocket 29 of the draft-yoke is adapted to receive a front set of compression-resisting elements in a draft gear of tandem type.
I claim:
1. In a draft yoke for railway ears, in
combination, a U-shaped yoke strap, an ininwardly inclined top and bottom faces, the 10 termediate thimble therefor, a yoke head setruss members being secured to said faces Cured to the Strap and outer truss members at their one end and to the intermediate secured to the yoke head at one end and to thimble and the yoke strap at their other the yoke strap and thmble at the other end. end.
4. In a draft yoke for railway ears, in In Witness that I claim the foregoing I 15 combination, a yoke strap, an Vintermediate have hereunto subscribed my name this 26th thimble, a yoke head and truss members, the day of May 1919. yoke head being provided with rearwardly JOHN F. OCONNOR.
