[Class 103 (v).] In railway &c. spring buffers of the hollow plunger and cylinder type the hollow plunger is adapted to be inserted in the cylinder from the front end thereof and to compress two or more springs when a load is applied, the rear end of the plunger contacting with a buffing washer interposed between the springs and the buffer is provided with means, not essentially involving the use of the buffer spindle, for preventing the ejection of the plunger from the cylinder. Fig. 1 shows two sets of springs G, H separated by a buffing washer I, the springs G, H being compressed in series until the plunger A contacts with the washer I after which the spring H is compressed. A split ring C sprung into a recess in the plunger prevents withdrawal of the plunger. In Fig. 2 spring G is compressed between the plunger head and a fixed abutment L until the plunger contacts with the washer I after which both springs G H, are compressed in parallel. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 the action of the springs is similar to that in Fig. 1, but the cylinder is not stepped but provided with locking pieces E carried by bosses D and engaging slots F in the plunger, A central spindle A‹ is provided as additional means for preventing withdrawal of the plunger.
