Abstract

367,639. Railway &c. vehicle buffers. MITCHELL, J., 69, Kenilworth Court, Putney, and COSSEY, J. C. G., Calbourne, The Vale, Golders Green, both in London. May 5, 1931, No. 13250. [Class 103 (v).] In a spring buffer for railway &c. vehicles of the kind in which a hollow plunger g provided with a central spindle f slides within a casing a, the spindle is secured to the plunger by means of co-operating sets of projections and recesses interacting in the manner of a bayonet-joint, means being provided for locking the joint so formed. According to the construction shown in Figs. 1, 1a, and 1b, the tubular portion of the plunger g is formed with spaced integral inward projections g<3> and the spindle f is fitted loosely with a washer j having corresponding projections j<1> which, after being engaged behind the projections, are locked in this position by a buffing washer l having lugs l<1> that project into the spaces between the sets of projections g<3>, j<1>, the washer l being maintained in operative position by the subsequently inserted spring e. Rotation of the spindle is prevented by a projection f<2> on the head f<1> thereof coacting with internal ribs g<2> on the plunger. A second buffing washer k is interposed between the spring e and a rear spring c so that, in absorbing a buffing shock, the springs c, e first act together in series, and finally the strong spring c only is effective. A recoil spring o is arranged between the washer j and a small washer n at the rear of the spindle head f<1>. In this construction the spindle lies entirely within the buffer and, in action, the ends of the spindle approach but do not contact with the headstock and the rear of the plunger head. In a modification, Fig. 2, the projections g<3> are formed on a member g<4> separate from but riveted to the rear of the plunger head g<1>, and the projections f<1> are formed on a washer j that in part receives the non-rotatable head f<1> of the spindle, while the latter projects through the headstock and is fitted with a rear recoil spring. Various other modifications are described in which the plunger head may be separate from the tubular portion, or the projections g<3> may be integral with the rear of the plunger head or separate from but riveted to the plunger body, or the washer may serve as a buffing washer, or the projections j<1> may be formed on the spindle head and coact with other projections either on the plunger head or plunger body.
