396,902. Buffers for railway vehicles. C. G., Calbourne, The Vale, Golders Green, London. May 31, 1932, No. 15450. [Class 103 (v).] In a buffer for railway and like vehicles the buffer head b is provided with an integral or attached rear extension b<1> adapted to slide on an intermediate thrust-transmitting member a, which in turn slides on the inside or outside of the buffer casing g, springs e, c being arranged within the casing and between the buffer head and end a<1> of the member a, and being adapted respectively to take the ordinary shocks and the ultimate or larger shocks. Ejection of the buffer head and member a from the casing is prevented in the usual way by a spindle f fitted at the rear of the headstock h with a recoil spring o, the spindle in the construction shown in Fig. 1 being integral with the buffer head, while the extension b<1> is separate from but riveted to the buffer head. In this arrangement the spring e is compressed first until the end a<1> contacts with the forward edge of the casing g, after which only the spring c is compressed. In a modification, Fig. 2, the head J<1> of the spindle f is flexibly connected to the buffer head, the extension b<1> is integral with the buffer head, and a washer k bearing on the spring e has an extension sleeve k<1> passing through the end a<1> and spring c to the bufferhead. In this construction, the spring e only is compressed at first, while, after the end a<1> contacts with the casing g, both springs c and e are compressed in parallel. Other modifications, with the springs functioning as in this last arrangement, are described, in which movement of the member a ceases when its rear end contacts with a shoulder on the casing g, in which the spindle head f<1> engages a cylindrical rearward extension of the buffer head, and in which the member a slides within instead of on the casing g.
