Buffers; combined buffer and drawgear.-In a tramcar or similar vehicle a plate or leaf spring buffer 10 supported in advance of the headstock 14 is connected by means of a draw-bar 26 with a second or reinforcing spring 31 disposed beneath the vehicle, the latter spring being designed to take drawing stresses and any direct or longitudinal shocks received by the buffer while a transverse or glancing blow is absorbed by that half of the buffer upon which it falls. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the front buffer comprises two arcuate leaf-springs 10 connected one on each side of a cross-head 11, which is secured by bolt 24 to the draw-bar 26 and is formed with upper and lower tongues 20, 21 slidable in relation to the headstock 14 and to a guide 22 secured thereto. A hole 19 in the cross-head 11 serves for the attachment of a shackle or like coupling. At its rear end 29 the draw-bar 26 is pivoted to a clamp 30 embracing the centre of the spring 31, while the ends of the springs 31 are received in boxes or castings 31<1>, Fig. 3, which are secured to frame members 34, 35 and have a fixed near wall 32 and a slidable front wall 33. Instead of forming the buffer in two halves it may consist of a single spring having either, several leaves or, as shown in Fig. 8, a single leaf 38 connected at its centre to the drawbar 26; in all constructions, however, the ends of the springs have a free sliding contact with the vehicle body, e.g., by means of pegs 15 bearing against wearing-plates 16.
