Abstract

410,999. Combined buffing and draw gear for railway vehicles. SKODA WORKS, PLZEN, 37n, Jungmannova, Prague. Sept. 4, 1933, No. 24519. Convention date, Sept. 2, 1932. [Class 103 (v).] Relates to an arrangement of the central buffing and draw gear of a railway vehicle, particularly in effecting a replacement of the side buffers and non-automatic hook couplings by central buffer couplings, whereby buffing shocks during the transition period are absorbed mainly by the side buffers, while in the ultimate form the central buffer couplings are associated with a continuous draw-gear which distributes the draught and buffing stresses to all the vehicles and avoids the necessity of strengthening the underframes. For this purpose the ultimate coupler 1, which during the transition period is fitted with an auxiliary coupling 2, is pivotally and yieldingly mounted on a draw-bar 6, which in turn is adapted to slide with a certain amount of lost motion determined by a pin and slot connection 7, 8 on a bar 9 forming part of the spring member 10 of a buffing and draw-gear disposed at the centre of the vehicle, an additional light return spring 11 being located between the vehicle frame and a collar 12 on the bar 6. Thus, in the transition period, buffing shocks are absorbed mainly by the side buffers, the spring 11 also being compressed to some extent, while the gear 10 does not come into effect unless the shocks are of sufficient violence to displace the bar 6 to the limit of its lost motion. Ultimately, the auxiliary coupling 2, side buffers, and the spring 11 are removed, and the bar 6 is pushed inwardly and made solid with the bar 9 either by welding or by inserting a wedge in the slot 8, thus effecting a conversion to a continuous draw-gear. Specifications 389,656 and 400,130 are referred to.
