W. F. GREEN l COUPLING YOKE Filed Apf- 9" 1921 Patented pr. 3, 1923.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM F. GREEN, F HOUSTON, TEXAS.
COUPLING YOKE.
Application 'led April 9, 1921.
T 0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and tate of Texas, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in a CouplingYoke, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a coupler. yoke.
One object of the inventlon is to provide a coupler yoke for railway cars through which the coupler stem may be attached to the car, said yoke being so constructed that it may be readily detached in case of breakage so that the broken parts may be easily replaced.
Another object of the invention 1n to provide a coupler yoke of the character described which is readily demountable and which is of simple construction so that it may be cheaply and easily manufactured and readily applied to or detached from the car. With the above and other objects 1n view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a plan view of the device. Figure 2 is a perspective view. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the filler block employed.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the yoke clamps employed, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the side members of the draft frame.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the f igures, the numerals 1, l designate the side members of the draft frame which are spaced apart and are designed to be fastened to the sills of the car. these members have the front and rear draft lugs 2 and 3, respectively, which form abut ting shoulders against which the front and rear followers 4 and 5 normally rest. Interposed between these followers is the draft spring 6. The yoke is formed of the upper and lower clamps 7 and 8. Between the rear ends of these clamps there is the ller The inner sides ofv Serial N0. 459,877.
block 9 which is interlocked with the clamps, as shown in Figure 2, and a bolt .10 is passed upwardly through the clamps and the block to secure them together. The forward ends of the clamps are thickened inwardly forming the shoulders 1l, l1, against which the `front follower 4 normally rests. The coupler stem l2 is fitted between they forward ends of the yoke clamps and is secured therein by means of a bolt 13 which passes upwardly therethrough. The bolts l0 and 13 are secured against detachment by means of the keys 14, 14, which are held against accidental displacement by means of the set bolts l5, l5.`
As the car is moving forwardly the follower 5 operates against the spring 6 which forms a yieldable cushion and when the carv is being moved rearwardly the follower 4 operates against said spring, the sp'ring acting as a yieldable cushion for absorbing the shock incidental to the operation of railway cars.
In case any part of the yokel should become broken the bolts 10 and 13 may be easily removed and the broken part replaced without dismembering the entire draft rigging. As at the present time constructed, the draft yoke is formed of a single U-shaped member and in case of breakage the entire draft rigging must be dismembered and a new yoke substituted, thus requiring much time, labor and expense. By the use of the yoke hereinabove. describedV this inconvenience and expense will be in a large measure avoided.
The combination with a draft frame 'formed of side members spaced apa-rtI and tween the forward ends of the yoke clamps, bolts passing upwardly through the front and rear ends of said yoke, said bolts passing through Said coupler stem and filler block 5 respectively, keys fitted through the respeo' tive ends of said bolts and means for securing .said keys against displacement.
