To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that LENOOH GEORGE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsbur h, in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Draft- Rigging; and I do'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the construction of draft rigging for railway cars, and particularly to the character of connection between the coupler and the draft yoke. The primary Object of the invention is to provide. simple and eflicient means for pivotally connecting the car coupler and yoke in a manner obviating the disadvantages incident to the use of the well known tail pin that is commonly employed for that purpose, such disadvantages being generally due to loss or looseness of the key, nut Or other retaining device of the tail pin resulting in the distortion or fracture. of the pin, a result which is promoted by the spreading of the arms of the ordinary wrought iron yoke consequent upon the loss or improper adjustment of the said retaining device.
Generally stated the invention involves the employment of a draft. yoke or draft member having at one end an integral. hood encircling the rear end of a car coupler and provided with oppositely disposed pivot pins projecting toward the center of the hood and separated at their adjacent ends, in combination with a car coupler which provided at its rear end with av plurality of arms extending into the interior of the hood and having a filler member'interposed between the said arms and also extending into the hood, the arms of the coupler being proyided with a plurality ofinwardly extending preferably cylindrical pivot pins 7 claims,

In the drawings, 1 is the car coupler and arms 3 is adapted to receive the usual or ;any desired form of cushioning unit (not shown).
The hood portion 5 of the yoke is prowhose axes are in alinement and whose adjacent ends are spaced from each other. These pivot pins may be, and preferably are, fitted .in correspondingrecesses or sockets 8 formed in the hood as such a construction permits them to be readily renewed when coupler 1 without unduly increasing the width of the hood.
The coupler is provided with a plurality of arms 10 having openings or recesses 11 therein corresponding to and adapted to re-v ceive the respective pivot pins 7. These armsare maintained in assembled relation to the pivot pins 7 by means of an interposed filler member 12 which is preferably secured in position by means of rivets 13.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the pivot pins 7 are formed integral with the hood 5 of the yoke 2 instead of being detachably mounted thereon. The filler member 12 which is interposed between the arms 10 of the coupler to maintain the latter in assembled relation to the pivot pins 7 may be secured in position by a rivet 13 passing through the arms 10. The construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is otherwise thesame as the form of the invention first described.
In assembling the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the rear ends of the arms 10 of the coupler are inserted in the hood portion 5 of the yoke 2, the pivot pins 7 are then inserted in the hood one at a time and entered in the corresponding openings 11 of the coupler and sockets 8 of the yoke, and the filler block 12 is thereafter inserted between the arms 10 of the coupler and secured in place.
In assembling the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the arms 10 of the coupler 1 are successively inserted in the hood 5 of the yoke and placed in position on their respective pivot pins 7 after which the filler member 12 is secured in position between the arms 10*.
On its under side and in alinement with the pivot pins 7 the hood 5 of the yoke 2 is preferably formed with a flanged bracket 14 supporting a detachable plate 15 which is secured in position by a cotter pin 16. Should the pivots 7 be broken the yoke 2* may be utilized by drilling a suitable hole 17 through the bottom of the yoke and partly through the top of the yoke at 17, and by employing separable pivot pins 7 for connecting the yoke to the arms '10 of the coupler, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the plate 15 serving to retain the lower pivot member 7 in place.
In case it is desired to employ a single pivot pin or tail pin 18 instead of using separate pivot pins 7" to effect a repair when the integral pivots 7 a have been broken, this may be done, as shown in Fig. 9, by drilling a hole through the filler block 12 in addition to drilling holes 17 and 17 a in the yoke 2 as heretofore described.
I claim:
1. In a draft rigging, the combination of a draft member having at one end an integral hood portion adapted to encircle the rear end of a car coupler, a plurality of pivot pins within said hood, said pins arranged in axial alinement and spaced apart at their inner ends, a car coupler provided at its rear end with a plurality of arms, and a filler member interposed-between said arms, said arms being respectively provided with recesses receiving said pivot pinsfan'd said filler member constituting means for maintaining the assembled relation of said arms and pivot pins.
2. In a draft rigging, the combination of a draft yoke having an opening adapted to receive a cushioning unit and having at its forward end an integral hood portion adapted to encircle the rear'end of a car coupler, oppositely extending pivot pins within said hood, said pins spaced apart at their inner ends, a car coupler provided at its rear end with a plurality of arms, and a filler member interposed between said arms and extending between said pivot pins, said arms being provided with recesses receiving said pivot pins. 7
3. In a draft rigging, the combination of a car coupler and a draft member connected thereto, one of said members having an integral hood portionad-apted to encircle the end of the other of said members, and the other of said members being provided at one end with a plurality of arms extending into said hood, a plurality of axially alined pivot pins within the hood said'pins being spaced apart at their inner ends, and a filler member interposed between said arms, said 7 arms being provided with recesses receiving said pivot pins.
4:In a draft rigging, the combination of a draft yoke having an opening adapted to receive a cushioning unit and having at its forward end an integral hood portion adapted to encircle the rear end of a car coupler provided on its interior with oppositely disposed sockets adapted 'to receive spaced pivot pins, alined pivot pins within the hood said pins being spaced .at their adjacent ends, and a car coupler provided at its rear end with a plurality of arms extending into said hood, and a filler member interposed between said arms and engaging said pivot pins to retain them in said sockets, said arms being provided with openings respectively furcated rear end of the coupler and having an opening to admit of the introduction of said rear end of the coupler member within the hood of the yoke, pivot members arranged in vertical alinement within the hood of the yoke and spaced apart at their adjacent ends, one of the first named members having openings for the reception of the pivot members, and a filler member inserted in the bifurcation at the rear end of the coupler between the adjacent ends of alined 10 pivot members within the hood of the yoke member.
