DRAFT YQKE.
Application filed June 9, 1925. Serial No. 35,933.
My invention relates to the construction of draft yokes employed in draft rigging for railway cars. The primary object of the invention is to provide a draft yoke of a design well suited to be made of cast steel and which embodies, as an integral part of the structure, a bearing member or portion adapted to receive the wear at the point where the yoke would ordinarily be supported by the draft gear carry iron. More specifically, it is the object of the invention to provide for the yoke an integrally attached bearing member of a form easily produced in the casting of the yoke, which will not impair the strength of the yoke or be liable to result in defective castings, and which will notinterfere with any other part of the equipment.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
in the drawings illustrating a preferred form of construction,-
Figure l is a side elevational view of a draft yoke embodying the invention, showing its relation to a draft gear carry iron.
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of the forward end of the yoke.
Figure l is a transverse sectional view of the yoke on the line ati of Fig. l.
The yoke illustrated in the drawings is of the quadruple shear type, its forwardend being fashioned with an upper lug l, a lower lug Z, and an intermediate lug S, whichare pr vided with alined perforations adapted to receive a pivot pin or tail pin connecting a car coupler thereto. The upper and lower arms of the yoke, rand 5, respectively, are spaced apart so as to receive a cushioning device (not shown) between them, and they are rigidly connected at their rear ends by a transversely extending portion (3 of the yoke.
intermediate of its ends the lower yoke arm is formed with. an integrally attached lug 7 o'liset outwardly from the outer face of the adjacent yoke arm so as to provide a support-ing face 8 for the yoke adaptedto contact a draft gear carry iron 9. It is advantageous to space the bearing member portion 10 from the adjacent yoke arm 5 and to connect .such parts by comparatively narrow columns or webs 11 which are integrally united to both. The form of construction which results is not only a desirable one from the point of view of casting, but it also ensures that the draft strains on the adjacent yoke arm are not communicated to the yoke supporting lug to any substantial extent. The bearing member 10 is preferably of the same width as the yoke arms and the transversely extending attaching webs 11 also preferably are the full width of the yoke.
It will be perceived that my invention affords a simple, practical and efficient means for relieving the arms of a draft yoke from wear, and that a yoke embodying the inven tion presents no difliculty of assembling it with other parts of the car equipment with which it is associated.
I claim 1. A draft yoke closed at its rear end and formed at its forward end for connection with a car coupler, said yoke being provided with spaced arms adapted to receive a cushioning device between them, and being provided with a lug oli'set outwardly from the outer face of the adjacent yoke arm, said lug comprising a bearing portion and a plurality of spaced columns, said bearing portion being adapted to contact a draft gear carry iron and being spaced outwardly fromthe adjacent yoke arm and being integrally united to the latter by said columns.
2. A draft yoke closed at its rear end and formed at its forward end for connection with a car coupler, said yoke being provided with spaced arms adapted to receive a cushioning device bet-ween them, and having a bearing member spaced outwardly from one of said yoke arms and integrally attached to said arm intermediate the ends of the latter, said bearing member providing a supportingface for said yokej lntestimony"whereof I afliiz my signature.
