BYC 31yg RQQA TTORNEY Jase 2h Ha Tri JOSEPH HARRIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'IO WILLIAM H. MINER, F CHAZY, NEW YORK.
DRAFT-RIGGING YOKE.
naaasee.
Application filed September 2, 1915. Serial No. 48,597.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HARRIS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Riggmg Yokes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ,of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in draft rigging yokes.
An object of the invention is to provide a yoke having a hooded forward end with which are associated removable keys for en gaging both the'upper and lower shoulders of a draw-bar.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a yoke having means for attaching it to any M. C. B. draw-bar whether the latter has a coupler key slot or not.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a yoke and draw-bar showing my improvement in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4c is a detail perspective view of one of the keys'employed.
In said drawing, A denotes a cast yoke having upper and lower arms lO-11 and a hooded forward end consisting of top and bottom walls 12 and 13, and side walls 1 114. The draw bar 15 is shown as provided with the usual top and bottom shoulders l6 and 17, the draw-bar butt being in serted in the hood of the yoke, as will be understood. From the drawing, it will. be noted that the vertical distance between the top and bottom walls 12 and 13 of the hood corresponds substantially to the vertical dimension of the draw bar butt so that there is thus provided a sliding fit between the draw bar butt and hood. 7
To connect the draw-bar and yoke under draft, I provide upper and lower, removable,
vkeys 18l8, the same being substantially Z shape in cross-section as indicated in Fig. 1 and extending through correspondingly shaped slots in the sidewalls 14; of the hood and cross slots 19-19 in the top and bottom walls 12 and 13 of the hood. In order to provide suiiicient strength, the side-walls 1l14: are extended at the top and bottom to form shoulders 2020 and within which portions of the Z shaped slots are formed.
To retain the keys 18 in proper position any suitable means may be employed such as the heavy cotters 2121.
From the preceding description, it willbe seen that the yoke may be connected to any standard draw-bar having upper and lower shoulders, and avoids the necessity for the use of a coupler key. Furthermore, the sec tion of the keys 18 is such as to afford great strength inasmuch as pull ,on the draw-bar against the inner horizontal portions 22 of the keys will cause only a tendency to shear the metal and not bend the same. It will also be apparent that upon removal of the keys 18, the draw bar can be withdrawn without the necessity of lowering the butt and similarly the draw bar can be inserted without having to raise the butt in order to effect the engagement between the yoke and draw-bar.
Under buff, the draw-bar may move inwardly independently of the yoke in a well known manner.
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my invention, I am aware that change and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and all such changes and modifications are contemplated as come within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
I claim:
In a device of the character described,
, Specification of Letters Patent. p t m 1 1, 191 a,
a yoke having a hooded forward end withhave hereunto subscribed my name this 14th day of August, 1915.
