JOHN F. ocomroa, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, assIenon T0 WILLIAM H. MINER, or CHAZY, new YORK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 19 18.
Application filed October 18, 1915. Serial No. 56,425.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OConnon a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bar and Yoke 1s a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in draw-bar and yoke connections.
One object of the invention is to provide a draw-bar and yoke connection so arranged that the draw-bar may be'disconnected or' replaced without disturbing the gear within the yoke.
Another object of the invention 18 to provide a, yoke having a locking block to engage the draw-bar shoulder, said block being so arranged that it is sustained in operativeposition by the draw-bar carry-iron and also minimizes the wear or chafing on the drawbar shank which ordinarily occurs at the carry-iron thereby prolonging the life of the drawar.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view of a portion of a car showing my improvement in-connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a horizontal, sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. "1. And Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the locking block employed with my yoke.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the shank of a draw-bar, 11 the shouldered butt thereof, and 12 the gear proper, the drawing illustrating a friction gear of a well known type. The yoke A. is a cast yoke having an upper arm 13, lower arm 14, vertical, rear connecting piece 15, side walls 16-16 at the front thereof, which together with the top arm, form a hood or head within which is received the 'butt of the draw-bar. At its forward end, the upper arm 13 is provided with an inwardly extending gib or shoulder 17 which is adapted to engage the corresponding upper shoulder 18 of the draw-bar butt. The side wings or plates 1616 are reanwardly and downwardly extended as indicated at 19 and are merged into the for ward end of the lower arm 14 of the yoke. The latter is also provided with a centrally located ear 20, which together with said sections 1919 are perforated and adapted to receive a pivot pin 21, thelatter being held in position by. any suitable means such as the cotters 22. Mounted on said pin 21 is a locking blockor swinging lever or latch- I B, the latter having a pair of perforated inner ends 23-23 which fit within the spaces between the members 19 and ear 20, whereb the block B is hinged or pivotally mounte The block B is also provided with a shoulder or abutment or gib 24, which, when the block is in normal position, engages the lower shoulder 25 of the draw-bar. Forwardly of the shoulder 24,.the block B is provided with a raised horizontal plate portion or handle or arm 35, the latter being preferably outwardly tapered! toward its front end. The plate or handle or arm 35 fits against the under side of the draw bar shank 10 and is interposed between the latter and the draw-bar carry-iron 26, as illustrated in the drawing. The side walls 1616 are provided with elongated slots 27 to accommodate a coupler key 28 although it will be pparent that the yoke is so arranged as to be operatively connected with the draw bar without the use of a coupler key. A tie plate 29 is shown of ordinary construction for supporting the gear.
To disconnect the draw bar from the yoke for repairs or replacement, it will be apparent that it is merely necessary to remove thecarry-iron and thereby permit the block B to be swung downwardly. This ermits the draw-bar butt to be lowered su ciently to clear the upper shoulder or gib 17 whereupon the draw bar may be removed, assuming that no coupler key is present or that it has previously been removed. Obviously, the lowering of the block B will not disturb or affect the gear proper, such as has hitherto been a disadvantage of certain prior ty es of cast yokes. In replacing the draw bar the block B is swung upwardly and in so doing a comparatively long leverage is obtained which assists in lifting or camming the butt of the draw bar up into proper position. When in proper position, it is obvious that the block or lever or latch B will move forwardly in unison with the draw bar .so' that any wear on the carry-iron is taken up by the block and the draw bar shank is thereby saved and its life prolonged, an important consideration in the present railway practice which requires heavy draw bars or couplers that are so far extended bestationary, Wear on the shank 10 is minimized since it is supported over a large area on the plateor arm 35.
I claim: A
