DRAFT- GEAR ATTACHMENT..
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, i915.
Application-filed December 28, 1912. Serial No. 739,021.
To all who/)t it may concern.' y
Be it knownthat I, HARRY F. WOERNLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gear Attachments, of which the following is a specilication. v
This invention relates to railway draft appliances, and more particularly" to a swivel support for the draw-bar.
Where couplers of the rigid lock type are employed, it is necessary to provide means for permitting lateral as well as vertical movement of the draw-bar and according to one construction for this purpose, as shown in Patent No. 833,702 of C: H. Tomlinson, dated October 16, 1906, a swivel connection is provided at the rear end of the draw-bar having a pivot pin arranged vertically for horizontal movement of the draw-bar and another pivot pin arranged horizontally to permit vertical movement of ,the draw-bar. With this prior construction when a bufng stress is applied to they draw-bar there is a tendency to buckle or bend at the pivot pin for vertical movement, particularly in rounding curves, the other pivot pin and the coupler head and therefore must transmit stresses through the pivot pin under compression.
The principal object of my invention is to provide lan improved draw-bar swivel in which the tendency to buckle is obviated.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a top plan view of a draw-bar and coupler construction with my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof and Fig. 3 a central horizontal sectionv of the improved swivel.
The invention is shown applied in the rmy hand.
'drawing to a draw-bar and coupler construction comprising a rigid lock coupler l hav.- ing a stem 2 within which is mounted a draw-bar 3. The rear end of the draw-bar 3 is made in the form of a fork having aws 4 between 'which is mounted a swivel connection 5. The swivel 5 isprovided with a horizontal aperture 6 for pivot pin 7 and forward of said aperture is a vertical aperture 8 for a' pivot pin 9. A member 10, secured to the car, is provided with bearings in whichthe pivot pin 9 is vertically mounted, a clearance space 11 being provided in said member, to permit the swinging movement of the swivel 5..
It will now be evident that by arranging the pivot connection of the draw-bar 3 as shown, there is no joint in the line of compression when butlng stresses are applied, the compression being transmitted through the solid draw-barto the pivot pin 7 and thence the stress is transmitted in tension -through the swivel 5 to the pivot pin 9 and the car.
Having now described my inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- In a draft gear appliance, the combinat1on with-a draw-bar, of a swivel connection -mounted on a horizontal vpivot pin carried by the end of the draw-bar, a supporting member secured to the car, and a vertical pin carried by said member and forming a pivot for'the swivel connection at a point intermediate the horizontal pivot pin and the outer end of the draw-bar.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set HARRY F. woERNLY. Witnesses A. M. CLEMENTS, S. W. KEEFER.
